FAFSA 2027-28 · Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania FAFSA deadlineMay 1, 2027

Most Pennsylvania State Grant applicants must submit the FAFSA by May 1. First-time applicants at community colleges, many trade/technical schools, hospital nursing schools, designated open-admission institutions, or nontransferable two-year programs have until August 1. You may also need the PA State Grant Form.

Pennsylvania: what to do, step by step

  1. 1

Create StudentAid.gov accounts — student and parent

The student and one parent each need their own account to sign the FAFSA. Identity verification can take a few days, so do this first.

    Create accounts at StudentAid.gov →

  2. 2

File the FAFSA by May 1, 2027 (or August 1 if that path applies)

Use May 1 unless you are a first-time applicant in a PHEAA August 1 category (community college, designated open-admission, trade/technical, hospital nursing, or nontransferable two-year). When unsure, aim for May 1.

  3. 3

Finish the PA State Grant Form if required

PHEAA may need the PA State Grant Form in addition to the FAFSA. Follow Apply or Renew instructions so your record is complete.

  4. 4

Check college dates, then set a filing reminder

Your real deadline is the earliest of: Pennsylvania's May 1 (or August 1) State Grant date, or any earlier college date. Set a reminder for that date now — email or calendar — so you get nudged before it hits.

    .ics includes state + federal deadlines with 30 / 14 / 7-day reminders.

  5. 5

When a reminder arrives: finish filing

That email or calendar alert means the deadline is close. Finish the FAFSA and any PHEAA form, then confirm each college on your list. Then you're done until aid offers arrive.

What Pennsylvania applicants need to know

  • May 1 applies to most degree / transferable college paths and all renewals. August 1 applies only to the first-time open-admission / community-college / trade paths listed by PHEAA.
  • After the FAFSA, complete the PA State Grant Form if PHEAA requests it.
  • Late applications may still get awards if funding permits — but do not plan on that.

Watch out

Picking the wrong PA deadline path is common — if you are not sure you qualify for August 1, treat May 1 as your date.
