FAFSA 2027-28 · North Carolina
North Carolina FAFSA deadlineJun 1, 2027
For the Next NC Scholarship at UNC System universities and North Carolina community colleges, file the FAFSA by June 1, 2027 for priority consideration and your maximum award. After June 1, applications are reviewed in order received while funds last. Private colleges use a different need-based path and should file as soon as possible after October 1, 2026.

North Carolina: what to do, step by step
- 1
Create StudentAid.gov accounts — student and parent
The student and one parent each need their own account to sign the FAFSA. Identity verification can take a few days, so do this first.
- 2
File the FAFSA by June 1, 2027 (UNC / community college)
June 1 is the Next NC priority date for UNC System and community college paths. Private-college applicants should file as soon as the FAFSA opens instead of waiting for June.
- 3
Confirm Next NC details on CFNC
Review eligibility (residency, SAI, income, enrollment) on the Next NC page. Your college financial aid office confirms the final award.
- 4
Check college dates, then set a filing reminder
Your real deadline is the earliest of: North Carolina's June 1 Next NC priority date (public path), the ASAP private path, or any earlier college date. Set a reminder for that date now — email or calendar — so you get nudged before it hits.
.ics includes state + federal deadlines with 30 / 14 / 7-day reminders.
- 5
When a reminder arrives: finish filing
That email or calendar alert means the deadline is close. Finish (or fix) your FAFSA, submit it, and confirm each college on your list got it. Then you're done until aid offers arrive.

What North Carolina applicants need to know
- No separate Next NC application — CFNC uses your FAFSA. Meet residency, SAI, AGI, and enrollment rules for eligibility.
- Private institutions: FSA and CFNC steer you to file ASAP after October 1; the NC Need-Based Scholarship for private colleges is a separate program.
- Aid is awarded until funds run out — late filing can still work, but priority and maximum award are at risk.
Watch out
Private-college families who wait for June 1 can miss the ASAP private path. Match the deadline to your school type — UNC/CC vs private.
