New York FAFSA deadlineJun 30, 2028
New York's FAFSA and TAP deadline for 2027–28 is June 30, 2028 — the same day as the federal FAFSA close. You still need a separate TAP / NYS Payment application after the FAFSA (or a DREAM Act / alternate path if you cannot file the FAFSA). File early anyway: colleges build packages months before June.

New York: what to do, step by step
- 1
Create StudentAid.gov accounts — student and parent
The student and one parent each need their own account to sign the FAFSA. Identity verification can take a few days, so do this first.
- 2
File the FAFSA — then finish TAP
Submit the 2027–28 FAFSA and complete the linked TAP application. The hard close for both is June 30, 2028, but earlier filing means earlier TAP estimates and college packages.

Watch HESC for other NYS program deadlines
TAP is the main statewide grant path. Scholarships such as STEM Incentive publish separate dates — do not assume June 30 covers every New York award.
- 4
Check college dates, then set a filing reminder
Your real deadline is the earliest of: New York's June 30, 2028 FAFSA/TAP date, or any earlier date a college on your list sets. Set a reminder for that date now — email or calendar — so you get nudged before it hits.
.ics includes state + federal deadlines with 30 / 14 / 7-day reminders.
- 5
When a reminder arrives: finish filing
That email or calendar alert means the deadline is close. Finish the FAFSA and TAP, then confirm each New York college on your list. Then you're done until aid offers arrive.

What New York applicants need to know
- After the FAFSA, complete the TAP application via the state link at the end of the FAFSA (or apply separately on HESC if needed).
- Eligible non-citizens may use the NYS DREAM Act or Alternate Eligibility Pathway instead of the federal FAFSA for state aid.
- Other HESC programs (for example STEM Incentive) have earlier program-specific deadlines — check HESC for those.
Watch out
June 30, 2028 matches the federal deadline — that late date is a trap if you wait. File FAFSA + TAP early so colleges and HESC can process awards on a normal timeline.
