FAFSA 2027-28 · New Jersey

New Jersey FAFSA deadlineApr 15, 2027

New Jersey Tuition Aid Grant deadlines split by path: prior-year TAG recipients must have the 2027–28 FAFSA processed by April 15, 2027. Other applicants aiming at fall and spring have until September 15, 2027 (spring-only: February 15, 2028). HESAA uses the processed date — allow at least three days before the deadline.

New Jersey: what to do, step by step

  1. 1

Create StudentAid.gov accounts — student and parent

The student and one parent each need their own account to sign the FAFSA. Identity verification can take a few days, so do this first.

    Create accounts at StudentAid.gov →

  2. 2

File early enough for your TAG path to process

Aim several days before April 15 (renewals) or September 15 (new fall/spring). HESAA needs a processed FAFSA — not just a same-day submit.

  3. 3

Finish NJFAMS / Alternative Application if needed

After the FAFSA, complete State Record tasks in NJFAMS. If you cannot file the FAFSA, use HESAA's Alternative Financial Aid Application by the same dates.

  4. 4

Check college dates, then set a filing reminder

Your real deadline is the earliest of: your TAG path date (April 15 or September 15), or any earlier college date. Set a reminder for that date now — email or calendar — so you get nudged before it hits.

    .ics includes state + federal deadlines with 30 / 14 / 7-day reminders.

  5. 5

When a reminder arrives: finish filing

That email or calendar alert means the deadline is close. Finish the FAFSA (or Alternative Application), confirm processing, and clear NJFAMS tasks. Then you're done until aid offers arrive.

What New Jersey applicants need to know

  • Renewals (received TAG in 2026–27): processed FAFSA by April 15, 2027.
  • New / non-renewal fall–spring applicants: processed FAFSA by September 15, 2027. Spring-only: February 15, 2028.
  • NJ Dreamers who cannot file the FAFSA use the New Jersey Alternative Financial Aid Application on the same state deadlines. After filing, complete your State Record in NJFAMS.

Watch out

Submitting on deadline day is too late if processing takes three days. Renewals who confuse April 15 with September 15 can lose TAG.
