Maine FAFSA deadlineMay 1, 2027

May 1 is Maine's FAFSA deadline (date received) for the Maine State Grant Program. Your completed FAFSA is the grant application — FAME does not require a separate state form.

Maine: what to do, step by step

  1. 1

Create StudentAid.gov accounts — student and parent

The student and one parent each need their own account to sign the FAFSA. Identity verification can take a few days, so do this first.

    Create accounts at StudentAid.gov →

  2. 2

File the FAFSA by May 1, 2027

Maine uses date received. File by May 1 so the Maine State Grant can consider you. One form covers federal aid and the state grant.

Start the FAFSA at StudentAid.gov →

  3. 3

Confirm Maine State Grant details with FAME

Awards are need-based and paid to your school. Review FAME's program page for SAI caps and enrollment rules for the year.

  4. 4

Check college dates, then set a filing reminder

Your real deadline is the earliest of: Maine's May 1 State Grant date, or any earlier date a college on your list sets. Set a reminder for that date now — email or calendar — so you get nudged before it hits.

    .ics includes state + federal deadlines with 30 / 14 / 7-day reminders.

  5. 5

When a reminder arrives: finish filing

That email or calendar alert means the deadline is close. Finish (or fix) your FAFSA, submit it, and confirm each college on your list. Then you're done until aid offers arrive.

What Maine applicants need to know

  • File the 2027–28 FAFSA by May 1. There is no separate Maine State Grant application.
  • You generally need at least half-time enrollment at an eligible Maine school (or limited NEBHE Tuition Break exceptions).
  • Colleges may set earlier institutional dates — check every school on your list.

Watch out

May 1 is date received — do not wait until the last day if processing or corrections might slip past the deadline.
