FAFSA 2027-28 · Iowa

Iowa FAFSA deadlineJul 1, 2027

Iowa sets July 1, 2027 as the FAFSA deadline for major state programs such as the Iowa Tuition Grant. Earlier institutional or program priorities may exist, and additional forms may be required — so file as soon as the 2027–28 FAFSA opens when you can.

Iowa: what to do, step by step

  1. 1

Create StudentAid.gov accounts — student and parent

The student and one parent each need their own account to sign the FAFSA. Identity verification can take a few days, so do this first.

    Create accounts at StudentAid.gov →

  2. 2

File the FAFSA by July 1, 2027

Submit by July 1 (midnight Central time on the federal list) for Iowa Tuition Grant and most Iowa state financial aid programs that use the FAFSA.

Start the FAFSA at StudentAid.gov →

  3. 3

Check Iowa program pages for extras

Confirm whether your path needs anything beyond the FAFSA, and watch for earlier college or program priorities.

  4. 4

Check college dates, then set a filing reminder

Your real deadline is the earliest of: Iowa's July 1 state date, or any earlier date a college on your list sets. Set a reminder for that date now — email or calendar — so you get nudged before it hits.

    .ics includes state + federal deadlines with 30 / 14 / 7-day reminders.

  5. 5

When a reminder arrives: finish filing

That email or calendar alert means the deadline is close. Finish (or fix) your FAFSA, submit it, and confirm each college on your list got it. Then you're done until aid offers arrive.

What Iowa applicants need to know

  • July 1 is the statewide FAFSA deadline Iowa lists for Tuition Grant and most state aid consideration — midnight Central time on the federal list.
  • Some programs or colleges may have earlier priority dates. Check Iowa College Aid / your school list.
  • You may need forms beyond the FAFSA for certain Iowa awards.

Watch out

July 1 looks late compared with Texas or Missouri — but Iowa colleges often set much earlier institutional priorities. Aim for the earliest date on your list.
