Create StudentAid.gov accounts — student and parent
The student and one parent each need their own account to sign the FAFSA. Identity verification can take a few days, so do this first.

File the FAFSA and finish SAMS by your program date
Aim for March 1 if you are pursuing Governor’s Distinguished Scholars. Otherwise calendar July 1 for Academic Challenge. Both need FAFSA + SAMS.

Confirm Academic Challenge / Future Grant paths
If Distinguished does not apply, use the Academic Challenge July 1 SAMS deadline and check Future Grant term dates on FSA / ADHE.

Check college dates, then set a filing reminder
Your real deadline is the earliest of: March 1 (Distinguished), July 1 (Academic Challenge), a Future Grant term date, or any earlier college date. Set a reminder for that date now.

When a reminder arrives: finish filing
That email or calendar alert means the deadline is close. Finish the FAFSA and SAMS application, then confirm each college on your list. Then you're done until aid offers arrive.

What Arkansas applicants need to know
- Completing the FAFSA is not enough — apply in ADHE's Scholarship Application Management System (SAMS) by the program deadline.
- Academic Challenge: annual July 1 deadline; FAFSA required.
- Arkansas Future Grant: FSA lists fall July 1, 2027 and spring January 10, 2028 FAFSA dates.
Watch out
FAFSA alone does not apply you for ADHE scholarships — missing SAMS by March 1 or July 1 is a common Arkansas mistake.
